How Should We React to Issues Today?

Sometimes I miss the times in my childhood, especially when national issues were not as critical and numerous as they are today. Back then, crises showed up one or two at a time and not so life threatening. Today, we're faced with several problems simultaneously, all significant, urgent and consequential--Covid, China and WPS, corruption, inflation, unemployment and drugs, to name a few. And all we can often do is just wait for the impact and react.

Some folks say we have to react and voice out protest because silence means tacitly siding with the crooks. Well, as Prof Pek says, that's what they think. Their opinion. Others' opinions are just as good. Different people have different ideas and ways of reacting and they all mostly count. If they want to react and voice their opinions, well and good. If not, it's probably even better.

Being Quiet is Good, Too

If you opt to keep quiet, it's an equally good option. I (Jaden Mero, together with brothers Roy and Gerry--sometimes Boy and Lewy go with us)--used to be a student activist and a journalist airing my activism in news feature articles I wrote about, but later changed mind when I learned more about the realities in life. I'd narrow them down to this--no matter how I fought for what was right, I still lacked money. But the activist "leaders" stayed rich or even got richer (probably except Ka Crispin Beltran).

That was what my veteran-journalist dad had been warning me all along, but I chose to pay a deaf ear. He let me march in the streets among faceless crowds of protesters and face the police and military because he probably thought experience would be my best teacher. And he was right. I later figured out how all this was going nowhere. Even silly. After the smoke cleared, we were still struggling to make money while our "leaders" continued with their good lives.

Dad's quiet wisdom as a veteran journalist finally made sense to me.

I still keep abreast with news developments here and abroad but I keep most things to myself and GOD. He alone has the solutions--that's the whole truth--and if we all just listen to him and obey--I mean, really take him seriously--we'd all have more than enough money for daily needs and wants. Without Him, nothing meaningful can happen, anyway. So why react or voice out my opinion? Why get angry on issues? Why go out and march?

Model It

Does keeping quiet on issues then mean siding with the crooks? Not really. The most effective way to fight wrong is to share what is right. And you can do this quietly. I believe the quieter you do it, the more effective "noise" you make. First, model what is right through your life and relationships. That's how action speaks louder than words. A lot of "righteous" noise makers become hard-to-reach, snobbish superstars that put up security walls around them. And because of overstress they become bad-tempered.

I understand the need for limits and boundaries (even Jesus had them), but acting snobbish superstars? Like traditional politicians who would not meet casually with ordinary folks but require them to go through channels for appointments. Unfortunately you see this even with big-time church ministers or preachers. They have this superstar aura.

Never Expect Help

Government is good and so are public servants. But expect help from them? Sometimes they may prove helpful, and I appreciate them for it, but mostly not. But it doesn't bother me anymore. Sometimes I react and protest, but mostly just keep quiet, knowing how "superstars" think about other people. It saves me time and energy and keeps me cool, relaxed and peaceful--something I wish my wife would also master.

Instead, I learned to look out for myself. I found that mostly you can't expect much help except from God and yourself. And God expects us to use what he makes available to us, like big opportunities. We should learn how to have a trained and accurate eye for them. God provides supernaturally and also materially, like his manna in the desert in Moses' time. It was supernatural and yet it was material--manna was something you cooked and made into loaves. Something you could touch and literally eat.

Grab Financial Opportunities

When God made cyberspace accessible to humans (he had created it a long time ago) he also opened up a lot of big possibilities and opportunities to us, especially online livelihoods and investments. And it seems so timely that the peak of online profitability coincided with the Covid pandemic and lockdowns, so that perceptive people with foresight ventured into online businesses and made huge profits, while the rest lost their jobs or went bankrupt--and complained.

Instead of ending up always a casualty during crisis and inflation and catastrophes, and instead of getting angry at this and protesting and marching in the streets and whatnot, smart folks quietly tried to make money online and succeeded. A lot even turned millionaires.

Those who tell us to go out and protest and make our voice heard will never put food on our tables. An online business will. If you chance on an online business or investment that works, you won't have to be so affected by negative events like inflation or a weakened economy anymore, especially if your online activity has worldwide reach.

Like how Forex or Cryptocurrency, for instance, is not locked in the dire developments of any one country or affected by the meddling greed or politicking of the unscrupulous, especially kept safe in blockchain technology. You can always grow your money by buying from a losing currency and then selling when it gains in value. But it's risky. I warn you, it's risky. But very profitable.

Yeah, there are lots of risks and scams with online businesses and investments, but just helplessly watching yourself as a casualty in the ups and downs of the economy (mostly down) is a bigger risk. You just wait what happens to you and hope some help would come. Or depend on your fixed salary or pension pay. That is a bigger risk to take from which you cannot hope for any ROI someday.

Vaccination and Election

Narrow-sightedness makes us fight each other.

I heard Prof Pek (so called because he's so good at teaching Pekwa) talk at length about national issues to the Ocho Boys at the trike terminal in Project 8, QC. Always in our history, he said, we've been a nation so easy to divide. We can't seem to have the maturity to take sides on an issue while respecting the opposing side. We often take things personally. Everything against our belief we take as a personal affront. So we take the opposers on and fight them. Worse is when people do this and look innocent, saying they're just "discussing," not really fighting.

It's our culture of small-brain, Lilliputian alliances or "kampi-kampihan." If you think differently from how I think, you're not an ally. Hindi ka kakampi. So you're an enemy. Worse, you're a traitor to our relationship. "I thought you were my friend! You're a traitor!" It's a mindset almost everyone nurtures through life, both the schooled and unschooled, the professional and the non-pro.

Vaccination

A simple matter as vaccination can easily divide us and reveal our immature perspectives. Why do I say simple? If you want the vaccine, fine. If not, good. It should be as simple as that. But most people will go beyond simply deciding what's good for them. They want others to decide as they do. If not, then they're idiots. They'd start bullying those with a different decision.

What's more frustrating is how some Christians join in the bullying and alienate the brethren who decide differently from them, accusing them of lacking faith and whatnot. If you attend church even at the height of the pandemic, you're a martyr. If not, you're a coward. Some spread rumor mongering about how the Covid vaccine is the mark of the Beast. Mind you, the mark is either on the forehead or right hand, not on the shoulder. And it's quite clear it's a number, 666.

And more importantly, the second Beast, the False Prophet, is going to introduce the Anti-Christ and require his mark on people. Without the intro to the man of perdition, no marking can start.

Tampered DNA

They say the vaccine introduces foreign particles or chemicals that can wreck our DNA. Well, the anti-tetanus vaccine has aluminum phosphate and formaldehyde. Some anti-flu vaccines have thimerosal as a preservative, among other chemicals. This is what an expert site said about thimerosal:
Vaccine manufacturers add the preservative thimerosal to multidose vaccine vials. Thimerosal helps prevent and kill dangerous bacteria and fungi in the vial.

Thimerosal contains mercury, which can be toxic in large doses. There isn’t enough evidence to show the small amount contained in the flu vaccine is dangerous.

[From Healthline]

Anyway, what bad effects Covid 19 (particularly long Covid) and the Covid vaccines may have are still to be seen. It's really a risk choosing any of the two options (being vaxed or unvaxed) but experts say the benefits from vaccines definitely outweigh the deadly effects of a full-blown Covid infection. Both being vaxed and unvaxed is a risk. Both shouldn't keep saying that taking the other option is too risky and stupid. They are both risky, and we need each other's help to get through all this, instead of scaring, condemning, ostracizing, bashing and bullying each other.

Bias Against the Unvaxed

Now, there's a rule prohibiting the unvaxed from going out of the house, especially taking public rides. I understand why government is doing this, but I don't agree. Government has to control the rapid spread of infection especially on the unvaxed, because they're most vulnerable. Everyone is, actually, including the vaccinated (we can all be carriers without knowing it), but the unvaxed are more in danger of Covid's cytokine storm and more likely to spread the virus in full strength. Vaccines are found to weaken the effects of Covid when transmitted to another person.

However, the unvaxed should NOT be barred from free travel as long as they wear face masks and shields as everybody else should. I know how important herd immunity is, but we cannot do it at the expense of people's rights. The vaccinated will fear being with the unvaccinated only if the former have no plan of observing proper protocols. They think being vaccinated means they're completely safe from Covid and can throw all protocols out the window.

I think this is precisely why a big number of the vaccinated caught the Omicron variant in December 2021 and January this year. They thought a full dose of the vaccine had ended their susceptibility to Covid and carelessly joined the tight crowds of shoppers (especially in Divisoria). Some either didn't wear masks or wore them carelessly. Fortunately, a lot of the unvaxed decided to take it easy, I guess.

Boosters will have the same effect--increase the number of Covid cases instead of decrease it--if those who get their booster shot think they've become invincible to Covid and become careless and mindless. Boosters add to our chances of getting only mild effects of the virus but not make us totally safe from it.

Elections

The worst thing we do is idolize our election bets, even willing to lose long-time friendships or die for candidates we support. The saddest is seeing the church divided over these candidates, and I mean divided. I even see Christians and church leaders mudslinging politicians on FB. After decades of independence we're still hooked to the dirty politics that came with the mock democracy the Americans gave us. We were programmed to focus on personalities not issues. Campaigning was all about getting your bet popular, not addressing issues that really mattered.

Moreover, we still cannot take sides on an issue without being divided. We want to prove our rightness and others wrong. When we see others expressing their choice we challenge or mock if it's not the same as ours. We simply cannot mind our own business, mind our own FB posts. We're still so immature.

Political Maturity

In this coming 2022 elections, more than seeing my bet win as president, I want to see Filipinos (and the church) finally mature in politics, or any issue for that matter. If I see how they've finally learned to respect others' opinions and choices, then it will be a great victory to me, regardless who wins the elections.

Nag-Positive si Mr Bean

Bad news.

Nag-positive si Mr. Bean. Sinipon ito at medyo nanamlay, kaya na-isip nyang pa swab. Ayun! Positive. Sapul! Bullseye! Kasi eh!!! Nagtataka sya dahil maingat naman daw sya. Naka-mask parati and all. Kaya parang di sya maka-paniwalang positive sya. Hasel kasi sa kanya mag-quarantine. Aksaya oras daw.

"Maingat???" sigaw ni Sabas. "Maingat ba yung ganon? Labas ng labas ng walang mask. Me mask nga nasa baba naman nya parati. Parang di ka na rin naka-mask non! Tapos hilig pang maki-siksik sa matataong lugar. Ayaw mag-chansing!

"Tumpak Roy!

Importante kasi ke Sabas ang CR, first and foremost. Di baleng walang makain basta me CR.

"Importante me sistema kayong matindi. Kaya dapat me alcohol o Lysol. Magastos ma-positive.

(In a few moments).........

Tas, wala pang mask!!!!!

Lumayo ako at nagtanong: "Sir Bean!

"Me mga saltik talaga kayo no!" sabing asar ni Totoy Golem. "Anung sisiw at inahen pinagsasabi mo, Victor?
